Senate breaks into closed door session to discuss removal of CCT Chairman, Danladi Umar

Senate Discusses Removal of CCT Chairman Behind Closed Doors

The Nigerian Senate convened a closed-door session on November 20, 2024, to deliberate on the removal of Code of Conduct Tribunal (CCT) Chairman Danladi Umar.

According to sources close to the Senate, the motion for his removal was initiated by Senator Dino Melaye (Kogi West) during the plenary session earlier in the day. It was seconded by Senator Enyinnaya Abaribe (Abia South).

Melaye cited allegations of gross misconduct, abuse of office, and ethical violations against Umar. He accused the CCT Chairman of bringing the reputation of the judiciary into disrepute.

In his motion, Melaye presented evidence of Umar’s involvement in an alleged assault on a security guard in Abuja as well as reported instances of bias and partiality in his conduct of CCT proceedings.

The Senate resolved to conduct a thorough investigation into the allegations and subsequently voted to adjourn to a closed-door session to discuss the matter further. The closed-door session lasted for several hours, with Senators deliberating on the merits of the motion and considering possible recommendations.

Sources within the Senate indicated that there was a diverse range of views expressed during the closed-door session. However, the outcome of the meeting and any recommendations made have yet to be disclosed publicly.

The Senate is expected to reconvene in the coming days to continue discussions on the matter and potentially make a final decision regarding Umar’s removal from his post.
