The Niger Delta Youth Congress (NDYC) has announced plans for region-wide protests against what they describe as attempts to monopolize Nigeria’s energy sector. The demonstrations, scheduled for Monday, July 28, will take place across the six states of the South-South region.
In a statement issued today, NDYC National Coordinator Israel Uwejeyan expressed strong support for the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation Limited (NNPCL) in its stance against alleged monopolistic practices, particularly those attributed to the Dangote Group.
“No individual or entity should be allowed to monopolize the energy sector,” Uwejeyan stated. “The implications of such monopolization are far-reaching and detrimental to the economic stability, energy security, and overall well-being of our nation.”
The youth group claims that Dangote Group is seeking to direct all AGO and Flight Kero petroleum products marketers to its refinery, despite concerns about product quality. The NDYC argues that such moves could stifle competition, innovation, and efficiency in the energy market.
Uwejeyan called on government authorities, regulatory bodies, and civil society organizations to advocate for a diversified and competitive energy sector. The group urged the federal government to implement regulations preventing monopolistic practices and promoting fair competition.
The planned protests aim to pressure the NNPCL and the federal government to reject what the NDYC terms as “selfish demands” by the Dangote Group. The youth congress emphasizes the importance of maintaining a level playing field in the energy sector for local businesses and communities, particularly in the Niger Delta region.
As of press time, neither the Dangote Group nor the NNPCL has responded to requests for comment on these allegations and planned protests.
