INEC’s Performance Applauded by Ohanaeze Amid Protests

The Ohanaeze Ndigbo Youth Council Worldwide has strongly condemned recent attacks on the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) by certain political actors. In a statement issued by its National President, Mazi Okwu Nnabuike, the council accused failed politicians of orchestrating protests and agitations to discredit INEC and disrupt Nigeria’s democratic framework.

According to the council, INEC, under the leadership of Professor Mahmood Yakubu, has maintained commendable impartiality, as evidenced by recent election outcomes where high-ranking officials, including sitting governors and National Assembly members, lost their seats. The council also pointed to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s inability to secure Lagos State as further proof of a transparent electoral process.

While acknowledging that no electoral system is flawless, the council criticized groups such as #ReformINEC and #SackYakubu Movement, describing them as tools of destabilization used by politicians to promote selfish agendas. It called for these protests to end, warning that those involved risk exposing their role in creating confusion and division within the polity.

The council further urged security agencies to intervene proactively to prevent the escalation of political tensions and ensure public order. It called on the President and National Assembly to disregard politically motivated efforts to undermine INEC’s credibility.

Reiterating its support for INEC and Professor Yakubu’s leadership, the council affirmed its commitment to defending Nigeria’s democratic institutions and rejecting any actions that threaten national unity and stability.
